The legend tells us what each bar represents. Just like on a map, the legend helps the reader understand what they are looking at. Legend examples can be found in the second and third graphs above.
Select your chart in Excel, and click Design Select Data. Click on the legend name you want to change in the Select Data Source dialog box, and click Edit. Note: You can update Legend Entries and Axis Label names from this view, and multiple Edit options might be available.

Click the Move Up or Move Down arrows to move the data series to the position that you want.
Tip: To quickly remove a legend or a legend entry from a chart, you can select it, and then press DELETE. You can also right-click the legend or a legend entry, and then click Delete.
Legends are a small visual representation of the charts data series to understand each without confusion. Legends are directly linked to the chart data range and change ingly. In simple terms, if the data includes many colored visuals, legends show what each visual label means.
Most charts use some kind of a legend to help readers understand the charted data. Whenever you create a chart in Excel, a legend for the chart is automatically generated at the same time. A chart can be missing a legend if it has been manually removed from the chart, but you can retrieve the missing legend.
In a chart or graph in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel, the legend is often located on the right-hand side of the chart or graph and is sometimes surrounded by a border. The legend is linked to the data being graphically displayed in the plot area of the chart.
Click the chart, and then click the Chart Design tab. Click Add Chart Element Legend. To change the position of the legend, choose Right, Top, Left, or Bottom. To change the format of the legend, click More Legend Options, and then make the format changes that you want.
In order to change the format, right-click the legend and select Format Legend. The Format Legend dialog box will appear. There are several options where we can change the legend position, fill, border color, border styles, and other formatting options.
