Fountain pens should be cleaned every four to eight weeks to keep them working properly. In this video, well show you how to clean a fountain pen, plus instructions on cleaning specific pen parts. Be sure to check out our guide for more details, including advanced cleaning techniques. Lets get started. Why Clean a Fountain Pen A fountain pen works through capillary action. Ink flows down the feed and nib slit to the writing surface. Dust, paper fibers, and dried ink can build up in the nib and feed, interrupting the pens normal flow and causing poor writing. If your pen suddenly experiences inconsistent flow or scratchiness, its time to clean the pen. If your pen is writing well and you wont be changing inks, a basic cleaning is enough. Heres how to do it: Uncap the pen and remove the nib section from the barrel. If your fountain pen uses a cartridge or converter, remove it from the section. Hold the nib section under cool, running water for a few seconds. Next, soak the nib sec

Apply rubbing alcohol, hairspray, or hand sanitizer to dilute the stain, making it easier to remove during the wash. These solvents help tackle most types of ink stains, but remember to test the stained garment for colorfastness first, as they can also attack fabric dyes and cause further damage.
Rubbing alcohol will dilute and release the ink, as will hairspray in many cases. Damp two paper towels with your solution of choice and sandwich the stain between the two. Start blotting the stain from both sides to lift the ink.
If you think your fountain pen has dried out because of clogging, the first step is to try flushing it with warm water. The best way to do this is by unscrewing the pen, removing the cartridge and pouring warm water into the feed and through the nib to flush out any hardened ink or sediment.

Ink sometimes settles mostly at the top level of the paper, making it easily removable through scraping. Scrape off the papers surface with a razor blade or fine / extra-fine sandpaper. Be sure to be gentle on your stroke and follow just a single direction when scraping.

Rubbing Alcohol or Isopropyl alcohol (the scientific name of rubbing alcohol) is very effective when it comes to removing ink stains. Simply pour some in your hands and rub away until all the ink stain is clear. Wash it off with soap and clean water and rinse clean.
Place a paper towel under the stain and sponge it with rubbing alcohol. Use an eyedropper to apply alcohol directly onto the stain or, for a larger spot, pour the alcohol into a small dish, immerse the stained area and soak for 15 minutes. The ink should begin to dissolve almost immediately.
You can also remove an ink stain from your favourite shirt using white vinegar and cornstarch. Begin the cleaning process by first dampening the ink stain with white vinegar. In a separate bowl, mix 2 parts white vinegar and 3 parts cornstarch to make a paste.
Using rubbing alcohol: Blot the toner stain with an absorbent cloth youve dampened with rubbing alcohol. Use hairspray: Spray the affected area with hairspray and blot BOTH sides of the fabric with the towel, then wash the garment in a washing machine using COLD water.
