How to classify equation transcript

hey guys welcome to another video and in this video I will be discussing the classification of differential equations so the goal of the previous videos was to introduce you guys into what a differential equation is and basically just give you the idea that were not just solving for a value we are solving for a function that fits the behavior described by the equation and that brings us to this video where we will talk about how we classify those equations so the first characteristic that we classify a differential equation by is its order so when we talked about slope fields we had an equation that looked like this where this guy is the first derivative of our unknown function and it is a function of x and y and since we are dealing with only the first derivative we call this a first order differential equation so what order means is the term that carries the highest derivative so for example if we had this equation and we recognize that we have a second derivative in this equation

Linear just means that the variable in an equation appears only with a power of one. So x is linear but x2 is non-linear. Also any function like cos(x) is non-linear. In math and physics, linear generally means simple and non-linear means complicated.
An equation is linear if its graph forms a straight line. This will happen when the highest power of x is 1. Graphically, if the equation gives you a straight line then it is a linear equation. Else if it gives you a circle, or parabola, or any other conic for that matter it is a quadratic or nonlinear equation.
Linear just means that the variable in an equation appears only with a power of one. So x is linear but x2 is non-linear. Also any function like cos(x) is non-linear. In math and physics, linear generally means simple and non-linear means complicated.
A linear function forms a straight line when it is plotted on a graph; and a nonlinear function does not form a straight line (it is curved in some way). The slope of a linear function is constant, whereas the slope of a nonlinear function is continuously changing.
Classification of expressions: We can classify the expression ing to these 3 conditions : 1) Based on number of terms expression contains. 2) Based on highest degree of the terms. 3) Based on number of variables it contain. Hence, the expression can be classified on these 3 conditions .
A system of two equations can be classified as follows: If the slopes are the same but the y-intercepts are different, the system is inconsistent. If the slopes are different, the system is consistent and independent. If the slopes are the same and the y-intercepts are the same, the system is consistent and dependent.
Simplify the equation as closely as possible to the form of y = mx + b. Check to see if your equation has exponents. If it has exponents, it is nonlinear. If your equation has no exponents, it is linear.
Types of Differential Equations Ordinary Differential Equations. Partial Differential Equations. Linear Differential Equations. Nonlinear differential equations. Homogeneous Differential Equations. Nonhomogeneous Differential Equations.
Classifying a System of Linear Equations: Put both equations in slope-intercept form. Set the two equations equal to each other. Combine like terms, and solve the resulting equation for x. Substitute x into either of the two original equations to solve for y.
An equation satisfied by every number that is a meaningful replacement for the variable is called an identity. An equation satisfied by some numbers but not others, such as 2x =4, is called a conditional equation. An equation that has no solution, such as x = x +1, is called a contradiction.
