Today's session will cover checksum, the third error detection mechanism. Checksum involves the sender creating a message and calculating the checksum to attach to the message, which is then validated on the receiver side. If no errors are found, the data is accepted; if errors are detected, the data is rejected. The process of creating and validating the checksum will be discussed in detail in this lecture.

Verifying checksums on Linux To verify MD5 checksums, type: Copy md5sum -c md5sums.txt. To verify SHA checksums, type the name of the command for the hashing algorithm you want to use. For example, to verify a SHA-256 checksum, use the sha256sum command. To verify a SHA-512 checksum, you would type the following command:
The command with the -c flag is run to compare the checksum with the value in the SHA256SUMS file. The filename and checksum compare all the files in the directory with the corresponding filename and calculate each files checksum. Based on the ISO files checksum, we can see it matches the original file.
To calculate the checksum, we can first calculate the sum of each 16 bit value within the header, skipping only the checksum field itself. Note that these values are in hexadecimal notation. To obtain the checksum we take the ones complement of this result: b861 (as shown underlined in the original IP packet header).
Solution: Open the Windows command line. Press Windows + R, type cmd and press Enter. Go to the folder that contains the file whose MD5 checksum you want to check and verify. Command: Type cd followed by the path to the folder. Type the command below. certutil -hashfile MD5. Press Enter.
If the checksum is correct, the last two digits on the far right of the sum equal 0xFF.To calculate the checksum of an API frame: Add all bytes of the packet, except the start delimiter 0x7E and the length (the second and third bytes). Keep only the lowest 8 bits from the result. Subtract this quantity from 0xFF.
A checksum is the outcome of running an algorithm, called a cryptographic hash function, on a piece of data, usually a single file. Comparing the checksum that you generate from your version of the file, with the one provided by the source of the file, helps ensure that your copy of the file is genuine and error free.
A checksum is a value that represents the number of bits in a transmission message and is used by IT professionals to detect high-level errors within data transmissions. Prior to transmission, every piece of data or file can be assigned a checksum value after running a cryptographic hash function.

How are Internet Checksums Calculated? Convert data into a series of 16-bit integers; Calculate the sum of all 16-bit integers, allowing for the carry bit wrap around; Take the 1s complement of the final sum (flip the bits)
