Almost any printer can print 100% legal checks for personal or business use. You simply need the right check printing materials, such as MICR ink (for ink-jet printers) or toner (for laserjet printers), blank check stock, and check printing software.
Yes, printing checks from your own printer is perfectly legal. However, they must be printed on special paper.
Generally, all the banks in the United States plus the financial institutions accept checks that are printed from check software. Obviously, there are some standards that the modern checks have to meet, for getting accepted. Banks usually insist on these standards, even though there are no legal factors behind this.
Pre-printed Checks (DAS)
What type of paper is used for checks? Any type of paper can be used for printing checks, but most accounting programs require check stock paper. We highly recommend using a textured check stock paper for added security.
You can print your own checks with almost any printer: inkjet, laserjet, even offset printers. Some check printers have special features that boost the security of your checks, like watermarks and even thermochromatic inkbut you can use any basic home-office printer, too.
If you are just printing a copy of the check for some reason, maybe for your paper files, then you can print on regular paper.
Printing a check on plain paper is not recommended. Instead, youll need check stock paper. Specifically designed for printed checks, check stock paper includes additional features such as microprinting, security warnings, and watermarks.
