To improve your writing and avoid cluttering the page, you should use footnotes sparingly and only to provide helpful additions or citations.
Footnotes are notes indicated in your text with numbers and placed at the bottom of the page. Theyre used to provide: Citations (e.g., in Chicago notes and bibliography)
If you must include the footnote in the middle of a sentence for the sake of clarity, or because the sentence has more than one footnote (try to avoid this!), try to put it at the end of the most relevant phrase, after a comma or other punctuation mark. Otherwise, put it right at the end of the most relevant word.
Click the reference number or mark in the body of the text or click Insert Show Footnotes(for endnotes, click Insert Show Endnotes).
In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and authors name along with other information related to the type of citation.
In APA and MLA style, footnotes or endnotes are not used for citations, but they can be used to provide additional information.
In the Desktop application, if you switch to Draft View and then click on Show Notes in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon, you can then see all of the footnotes in the Footnote Pane.
A footnote is a reference placed at the bottom of a page or footer. They are referenced in the text in the same way as a citation i.e. the referenced text is followed by a superscript numeral (1), which corresponds to the numbered footnote at the bottom of the page.
Searching for Footnote and Endnote Marks Press Ctrl+F to display the Find tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. (See Figure 1.) In the Find What box, enter the text for which you want to search. To search for a footnote mark, enter ^f. Set other searching parameters, as desired. Click on Find Next.
Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.
