I dont want to show the numbers as data labels on the chart but I want to explain why the chart behave in particular matter so lets first draw a chart simple line chart now to add data labels all that you have to do is click on the + sign and click on data labels but these are the data labels. Actually what I want is something else the options. Here I removed the data labels and go to this option which is very powerful. This asks you where are the cell from where it should pick up the new labels and this time I select the third column and thats it it picks only those labels which have some text in it we also have another option here which says add data labels but did you notice that there is a menu there which allows you a simple data labels or a data callout which looks like this.
