Add a note in an Excel chart Click the chart to activate the Chart Tools, and then click Format Text Box (in the Insert Shapes group). Draw a text box in the chart area as below screenshot shown, and type the note content as you need in the text box.

On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote.
Go to the Insert menu and click Footnote to open the Footnote and Endnote box. Select the options you want in the Footnote and Endnote box. You can choose between footnotes and endnotes, numbering format, custom marks and symbols, a starting number, and whether to apply the numbering to the whole document.
Click the Home tab. Click the small Down Arrow in the bottom right corner of the Font section of the ribbon. Click on the Superscript box to insert a check mark, then click OK. The footnote takes on the traditional, small and slightly higher appearance compared to normal text.
