The percentile number means that your child exceeds that percentage of children their age for that measurement. If your child is in the 75th percentile for height, they are taller than 75% of other kids their age. If they are in the 25th percentile for weight, they only exceed 25% of children their age in weight.
Reading the lines The curved lines show the percentile numbers, or patterns of growth. The percentile number means that your childs growth exceeds that percentage of other children their age. If your child is in the 75th percentile for weight, that means that your child weighs more than 75% of children the same age.
Weight-for-age reflects body weight relative to the childs age on a given day. This indicator is used to assess whether a child is underweight or severely underweight, but it is not used to classify a child as overweight or obese.
Make a small dot where the two lines intersect. that indicate the rank of the childs measurement. For example, when the dot is plotted on the 95th percentile line on the CDC BMI-for-age growth chart, it means that 5 of 100 children (5%) of the same age and sex in the reference population have a higher BMI-for-age.
30 out of 1,000 childrens (3%) weight would be above the 97th percentile, and 970 would be under it. And 30 children (3%) would be under the 3rd percentile. Percentiles, in other words, are a measurement tool to show where your child is in relation to other children.
Age is at the top and bottom of the chart, and length and weight are along the left and right sides. The curved lines show the percentile numbers, or patterns of growth. The percentile number means that your childs growth exceeds that percentage of other children their age.
Whereas the WHO charts are growth standards, describing the growth of healthy children in optimal conditions, the CDC charts are a growth reference, describing how certain children grew in a particular place and time.
The 97th percentile means that a child on that percentile is going to be above average for their height or weight. A child on this percentile will be taller than 97% of kids. The kids on the 50th percentile will be an average height or weight and taller than 50% of kids.
