Physical changes include transitions from one state to another, such as from solid to liquid or liquid to gas. Cutting, bending, dissolving, freezing, boiling, and melting are some of the processes that create physical changes.
The five conditions of chemical change: color change, formation of a precipitate, formation of a gas, odor change, temperature change.
In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes but the kind of matter in the substance does not. However in a chemical change, the kind of matter changes and at least one new substance with new properties is formed. The distinction between physical and chemical change is not clear cut.
Physical changes are those in which the shape, size, or state of the matter changes, but the substance is still essentially the same. For example, chopping up a carrot or ice melting into water are both physical changes. Chemical changes are those where one or more substances are combined to produce a new substance.
Some common examples of physical changes are: melting, freezing, condensing, breaking, crushing, cutting, and bending.
In a chemical change, the atoms in the reactants rearrange themselves and bond together differently to form one or more new products with different characteristics than the reactants. When a new substance is formed, the change is called a chemical change.
Change is a process in which a substance becomes a different one from what it was earlier. It is the difference between the initial and the final state of any substance. The difference in the size or shape of an object is termed as a change. Change can be either reversible or irreversible.
Examples of chemical changes are burning, cooking, rusting, and rotting. Examples of physical changes are boiling, melting, freezing, and shredding.
Remember, the appearance of matter changes in a physical change, but its chemical identity remains the same. Crushing a can. Melting an ice cube. Boiling water. Mixing sand and water. Breaking a glass. Dissolving sugar and water. Shredding paper. Chopping wood.
A typical chemical reaction is written with stoichiometric coefficients, which show the relative amounts of products and reactants involved in the reaction. Each compound is followed by a parenthetical note of the compounds physical state: (l) for liquid, (s) for solid, (g) for gas.
