Encoded size increase This means that the Base64 version of a string or file will be at least 133% the size of its source (a ~33% increase). The increase may be larger if the encoded data is small.
Radix 64 or base 64 is a binary-to-text encoding system that is designed to allow binary data to be represented in ASCII string format. This is an educational project accepts a string from a user and Radix 64 encodes it.
Base64 is not encryption. But yes, different input strings will always encode to different Base64-encoded strings, and the same input string will always encode to the same Base64-encoded string. It's not a hash though, so small changes in the input will only result in small changes in the output.
Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. [ Download now: A sysadmin's guide to Bash scripting. ] Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences.
There is no "shorter version" of base64. But what you can do is retrieve only the first characters of the base64 result; with cut for instance. Using cut this way is also safe if the base64 result is shorter than 10 characters.
Radix-64 (as described for OpenPGP) OpenPGP, described in RFC 4880, describes Radix-64 encoding, also known as "ASCII Armor". Radix-64 is identical to the "Base64" encoding described from MIME, with the addition of an optional 24-bit CRC.
The base64 is a binary to a text encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format. base64 is designed to carry data stored in binary format across the channels. It takes any form of data and transforms it into a long string of plain text.
To decode radix 64 encoded text, typically four characters are converted to three bytes. If the string contains a single padding character (i.e. '=') the last four characters (including the padding character) will decode to only two bytes, while '==' indicates that the four characters will decode to only a single byte.
Radix-64 conversion maps arbitrary binary into printable characters as follows: Page 6 6 Radix-64 Conversion 1. The binary input is split into blocks of 24 bits (3 bytes). 2. Each 24 block is then split into four sets each of 6-bits.
Although Base64 is a relatively efficient way of encoding binary data it will, on average still increase the file size for more than 25%. This not only increases your bandwidth bill, but also increases the download time.
