When writers insert or alter words in a direct quotation, square brackets[ ]are placed around the change. The brackets, always used in pairs, enclose words intended to clarify meaning, provide a brief explanation, or to help integrate the quote into the writers sentence.
To make it clear to readers that you are quoting the beginning of one line and the ending of the next, use ellipses to replace omitted words and a slash to indicate that one line ends and another begins: The poet writes, He had forty-two boxes, . . . / . . . his name painted clearly on each.
What strategies can I use to paraphrase? Use synonyms for all words that are not generic. Change the structure of the sentence. Change the voice from active to passive and vice versa. Change clauses to phrases and vice versa. Change parts of speech.
If any incorrect spelling, punctuation, or grammar in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and in brackets, immediately after the error in the quotation. Nowak (2019) wrote that people have an obligation to care for there [sic] pets (p. 52).
Yes. You may want to make minor changes to a direct quotation. This is possible (as long as you dont change the meaning), but you must follow the rules covered in Sections 8.308.31 of the APA Manual.
How do you cite a poem in an essay? To cite a poem in an essay, you include quotation marks around a short quote or three lines or less. You separate the lines using a forward slash (/) between the stanzas. For a block quote, or 4 lines or more, separate the quote from the rest of the text with a 5-inch margin.
Paraphrasing ALWAYS requires a citation. Even if you are using your own words, the idea still belongs to someone else. Sometimes there is a fine line between paraphrasing and plagiarizing someones writing.
If you need to edit quotes in your writing, keep the following in mind: Use an ellipsis to indicate omissions in the text. Mark additions or changes by placing the edited text in square brackets. Use the term [Sic] to show that youve duplicated an error from a source.
Shortening a quote If some parts of a passage are redundant or irrelevant, you can shorten the quote by removing words, phrases, or sentences and replacing them with an ellipsis (). Put a space before and after the ellipsis. Be careful that removing the words doesnt change the meaning.
If you rewrite that perfect paragraph or sentence (aka you paraphrase or summarize it), remember that the ideas in the reworded version still came from the original author(s)so you must cite the original source! If you really want to use that superb sentence from another source, then quote it!
