Base64 is not an encryption algorithm and in no case should it be used to “hash” passwords or “encrypt” sensitive data, because it is a reversible algorithm and the encoded data can be easily decoded. Base64 may only be used to encode raw result of a cryptographic function.
BASE64 characters are 6 bits in length. They are formed by taking a block of three octets to form a 24-bit string, which is converted into four BASE64 characters.
Base64 is not encryption. But yes, different input strings will always encode to different Base64-encoded strings, and the same input string will always encode to the same Base64-encoded string. It's not a hash though, so small changes in the input will only result in small changes in the output.
Most email systems allow the message to consist of only ASCII characters. To translate other characters not in the ASCII set , PGP uses Radix 64 conversion.
Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. [ Download now: A sysadmin's guide to Bash scripting. ] Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences.
Data obfuscation: Base64 can be used to obfuscate data since the resulting text is not human readable. However, this should not be used as a security mechanism as the encoding is easily reversible.
Base64 is not Encryption While it may obfuscate that actual data from should surfers, anyone who has access to base64 encoded data can easily decode it.
The length of a Base64-encoded string is always a multiple of 4. Only these characters are used by the encryption: “A” to “Z”, “a” to “z”, “0” to “9”, “+” and “/” The end of a string can be padded up to two times using the “=”-character (this character is allowed in the end only)
The schema is SYSTOOLS. A character expression to be encoded. The maximum length in 2732 characters.
Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences. For example, consider the sentence Hi\n, where the \n represents a newline. The first step in the encoding process is to obtain the binary representation of each ASCII character. This can be done by looking up the values in an ASCII-to-binary conversion table.
