A motif is an element or idea that recurs throughout a work of literature. Motifs, which are often collections of related symbols, help develop the central themes of a book or play. For example, one of the central themes in Romeo and Juliet is that love is a paradox containing many contradictions.
Motifs are recurring images, quotes, or concepts that take on a figurative or symbolic meaning throughout the story. Motifs are used to tie the readers into the story and to help them understand some of the important concepts in a given work. A motif will often come up again and again at important moments in a story.
Motifs can be symbols, sounds, actions, ideas, or words. Motifs strengthen a story by adding images and ideas to the theme present throughout the narrative.
