You need a commercial operator license to operate, and/or to repair and maintain, specified ship, and aircraft radio communication stations. The Ham Test Online web site estimates that it will take 10 hours to study for the Technician exam, 20 hours to study for the General exam, and 30 hours to study for the Amateur Extra exam.
If you want to fly an aircraft outside the US, you will need an authorisation called FCC (Federal Communications Commission). To receive your FRN (FCC Registration Number) you will need to fill the form 605 online. Thank you for registering with the FCC.
Ham requires at least a basic license and test that might take you 2-3 days, including study time. More advanced Ham licenses require more studying. Learning and using the equipment is also harder in Ham than the others.

FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit Private or Commercial Pilots who fly outside of the United States, or who wish to operate an HF Radio need to obtain a Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit from the Federal Communications Commission or FCC.
The entry level Technician License Exam requires around 10 hours of study for most people. The Technician and General License exams each have 35 questions, and the Amateur Extra has 50. In order to pass the each test, you must get at least a 74%.
