You can combine multiple conditional formats overlapping cells/rows. (Excels just a little picky that you do it just right!) Always use New Rule as opposed to using the built-in rules.
How to make custom color scale in Excel Select the cells to be formatted. Click Conditional Formatting Color Scales More Rules. In the New Formatting Rule dialog box, configure these options: In the Format Style dropdown box, select either 2-Color Scale (default) or 3-Color Scale. When done, click OK.
How to create a conditional formatting rule based on formula Select the cells you want to format. On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Conditional formatting New Rule In the New Formatting Rule window, select Use a formula to determine which cells to format. Enter the formula in the corresponding box.
If your formula refers to a wrong cell, a mismatch between the active cell and the formula will occur, which will result in conditional formatting highlighting wrong cells.
When a conditional formatting rule refers to a different row, Excel might create extra rules every time you insert or delete rows within the formatted range of cells. Thats how you can end up with hundreds of duplicated rules!
To highlight cells ing to multiple conditions being met, you can use the IF and AND Functions within a conditional formatting rule. Select the range you want to apply formatting to. In the Ribbon, select Home Conditional Formatting New Rule.
On the Home tab, in the Style group, click the arrow next to Conditional Formatting, and then click Highlight Cells Rules. Select the command you want, such as Between, Equal To Text that Contains, or A Date Occurring. Enter the values you want to use, and then select a format.
Any conditional formatting argument must generate a TRUE result, meaning that at a literal level, your conditional formatting rule is an If/Then statement along the lines of If this condition is TRUE, THEN format the cell this way.
Double-check the rule in the Conditional Formatting Rules Manager. Sometimes, for no reason at all, Microsoft Excel distorts the rule you have just created. So, if the rule is not working, go to Conditional Formatting Manage Rules and check both the formula and the range it applies to.
