Vellum is what many know as traditional blueprint paper, and it is commonly used for architectural and engineering plans for black-and-white blueprints. It is also possible to print blueprints on Mylar paper, which is transparent or frosted, by using a laser process.
A blueprint is a reproduction of a technical drawing or engineering drawing using a contact print process on light-sensitive sheets. Introduced by Sir John Herschel in 1842, the process allowed rapid and accurate production of an unlimited number of copies.
Vellum paper has an ivory or frosted quality. It is semi-translucent relative to its thickness, and it is available in semi-gloss and matte finishes. Vellum paper is a modern support chiefly used for tracing technical drawings, plans, and maps.
To make a blueprint, place the tracing in a blueprint frame with the inked side next to the glass and lay a sheet of blueprint paper with the sensitized side next to the tracing. Put the back of the frame in place and lock it in position so as to hold the tracing paper. Expose to sunlight for 30 seconds.
After this coating is dried, the paper is placed in direct contact with an original drawing or intermediate negative and exposed to light. The ferric salts are chemically altered when exposed to light. The exposed print is rinsed in water in order to release the organic acid in the coating.
Blueprint Printing Paper Sizes Two of the most common architectural drawing sizes are 18 x 24 and 24 x 36, but the Business Box also prints construction plans of 36 x 48 sizes. Large sizes are necessary on bigger and more detailed projects.

Mylar (film) works best in these cases. it is semi-rigid, has a long, long life, and is semi-transparent so the drawings could overlay on changes on paper. It was the perfect solution.
