in a previous video I made some nice Prussian blue pigment and I showed how it can be used to color things like paint this time though Im gonna be exploring a more specialized used for it which is in a process called cyanotype in this process the Prussian blue is formed directly in paper and was classically used to make blue prints over the years many different formulations were used and developed but the most popular one uses potassium ferrocyanide and a UV sensitive iron compound called ferric ammonium citrate as far as I know theres no safe and reasonable way to make the ferrocyanide so I ended up just buying it from eBay it was possible to make the ferric ammonium citrate though starting from the ferric chloride that I made in the last video it was honestly really hard to find a procedure for this and the only decent one I found was from the 1950s I ended up down scaling it and altering a couple things but in my opinion it still worked out really well Ive included a link to the

The blueprinting paper, which is still white, is placed in an aqueous solution of potassium ferricyanide. This compound reacts with ammonium ferrous citrate and forms a compound called prussian blue. This compound, in its hydrated form, is blue.
In a very dim room or in the dark: pour the potassium ferricyanide and iron(III) ammonium citrate solutions together into a petri dish. Stir the solution to mix it. Use tongs to drag a sheet of paper across the top of the mixture or else paint the solution onto the paper using a paintbrush.

The blueprint process The best known is a process using ammonium ferric citrate and potassium ferricyanide. The paper is impregnated with a solution of ammonium ferric citrate and dried. When the paper is illuminated, a photoreaction turns the trivalent ferric iron into divalent ferrous iron.
Vellum is what many know as traditional blueprint paper, and it is commonly used for architectural and engineering plans for black-and-white blueprints. It is also possible to print blueprints on Mylar paper, which is transparent or frosted, by using a laser process.
While you may still need the help of a professional architect to successfully draft blueprints for a complicated building project, you can make your own blueprints to design a simple project. You can use tracing paper and an architects ruler to draw them by hand yourself or use a computer program to make your design.
The paper is coated with a diazo compound that is sensitive to ultraviolet light.

Blueprints are more correctly called cyanotypes (cyan = dark blue). A compound solution of ferric (iron) ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide (salt) is coated onto one side of the paper that will be the copy.
The iron salt used in blue prints is Fe2(C2O4)3 (Ferric oxalate).
