A common question in many of the trainings I teach is: Should I mark the required fields in a form? If most fields in the form are required, should we still mark them? The short answer is: yes. Its best to have such a specification next to every single required field instead of just having a message such as, All fields are required, or All fields are required unless otherwise indicated at the top of the page or no message at all. Most of the time, people dont read small or even large font instructions at the top of a form. When they see a form, they often just jump into filling it. Even when people read such instructions, they might forget the instructions if they happen to be interrupted while they fill out the form. You might think that it will be more efficient to just mark the optional fields, since there are fewer. Unfortunately, to determine that a field is required, people will have to scan the entire form and check for any optional fields. That is not going to happe

Steps - Go to setup - click object manager - find and choose contact - click fields and relationships - click the drop-down (extreme left side of the row) - click edit - Scroll down the page - In general options, uncheck Always require a value in this field in order to save a record - click save.
Click the Styling tab. In the Required Fields section, change the Custom Required HTML setting. For example, simply enter Required or if you are familiar with HTML you can enter anything else you wish here.
The required attribute is a boolean attribute. When present, it specifies that an input field must be filled out before submitting the form. Note: The required attribute works with the following input types: text, search, url, tel, email, password, date pickers, number, checkbox, radio, and file.

Click on Insert Field and scroll until you find the Current User selection. From there, click on the Bypass VR field. The field will now show in your validation rule. The validation should trigger when the field is FALSE.
Just remove the required attribute from the one you want to be optional and it wont require that to be filled out for submission.
Click on gear icon then Setup Object Manager. Choose the object Page Layouts. Select the page layout that you use on the object. Click on the wrench icon beside the custom field that you will make required. Select the Required checkbox. Click on Ok, then click on Save.

Some users may want to remove the Company field requirement on Leads.In Classic: Go to Setup | Customize | Leads | Page Layouts. Click Edit next to the Page Layout name. Click on the wrench icon for the Company field. Deselect the Required checkbox and click OK. Save the Layout.
