The best way to disable a link tag is by using the CSS property pointer-events: none; . When you apply pointer-events: none; to any element, all click events will be disabled. Because it applies to any element, you can use it to disable an anchor tag. By using a CSS class, you can disable multiple anchor tags at once.

Hold Ctrl+Alt to disable the links temporarily. This extension is deprecated - Chrome has a built-in feature for this, just holding Alt while selecting prevents the link from being clicked. You can safely remove it.
Here is the pure HTML/CSS solution : remove the href tag, and put your anchor in the name attr (you probably knew this already) Add the following style to your link : a{ text-decoration: none; cursor: default; }
Change the display or visibility. Changing your visibility to hidden will hide the link without influencing the page layout. Your code for this stage should simply look like: display: none. visibility: hidden.
Disable a link # It is still possible to disable a link by following 3 steps: remove the href attribute so that it can no longer receive the focus. add a role=link so that it is always considered a link by screen readers. add an attribute aria-disabled=true so that it is indicated as being disabled.
Disable links. Hold Ctrl+Alt to disable the links temporarily. This extension is deprecated - Chrome has a built-in feature for this, just holding Alt while selecting prevents the link from being clicked. You can safely remove it.
