To format a block quote in MLA: Introduce the quote with a colon and set it on a new line. Indent the whole quote 0.5 inches from the left margin. Place the MLA in-text citation after the period at the end of the block quote.
Block quotations start on their own line. The entire block quotation is indented 0.5 inches, the same as the indentation for a new paragraph, and is double spaced. Block quotations are not surrounded by any quotation marks. The punctuation at the end of the block quotation goes before the citation.
Choose pull quotes that do not need brackets, added words, ellipses. If quoted material from text is paraphrased in display type for readability or because of space limitations, omit quotation marks. NGM prefers that pull quotes be just that, material pulled from the text and not stand-alone information.
: a significant passage in an article, story, book, or speech that is quoted and used for drawing attention to its source.
Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented 1/2 inch from the left margin while maintaining double-spacing. Your parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation mark. When quoting verse, maintain original line breaks. (You should maintain double-spacing throughout your essay.)
Use double quotation marks (“”) around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, “She sat down, quivering in every limb” (61).
No quotation marks are used. You have to use a block quote when quoting more than around 40 words from a source. In APA and MLA styles, you indent block quotes 0.5 inches from the left, and add an in-text citation after the period. Some other citation styles have additional rules.
Block quotations start on their own line. The entire block quotation is indented 0.5 inches, the same as the indentation for a new paragraph, and is double spaced. Block quotations are not surrounded by any quotation marks. The punctuation at the end of the block quotation goes before the citation.
: a section of a newspaper, magazine, etc., that is meant to be removed and looked at separately. That article is in the special pullout (section). a ten-page pullout.
What is a block quotation example? An example of a block quote includes any passage you cite that is more than 40 words. The block quote consists of a lead-in line, and it is set off with a 1/2 inch indent for the entire passage. You also need to include a citation, either at the beginning or end of the passage.
