A typical TXT record looks like the following in standard BIND format: $ORIGIN example.com. ; designates the start of this zone file in the namespace @ 3600 IN TXT You can put any text ; A TXT record for example.com. @ 3600 IN TXT v=spf1 a:mail.example.com -all ; An SPF record for example.com. mail.
Most TXT records can have up to 255 characters. For TXT records that include more than 255 characters, DNS adds multiple strings together in a single record. If youre using a 2048-bit DKIM key, you cant enter it as a single text string in a DNS record with a 255-character limit.
Add TXT records at your domain provider Your domain host is typically where you purchased your domain name. If youre not sure who that is, you can identify your domain host. We recommend adding no more than 49 TXT records at your domain provider because this is the maximum number supported by most domain providers.
You may have more than 255 characters of data in a TXT or SPF record, but not more than 255 characters in a single string. If you attempt to create an SPF or TXT record with a long string (255 characters) in it, BIND will give an error (e.g. invalid rdata format: ran out of space.)
A TXT record (short for text record) is a type of resource record in the Domain Name System (DNS) used to provide the ability to associate arbitrary text with a host or other name, such as human readable information about a server, network, data center, or other accounting information.
TXT records are a type of Domain Name System (DNS) record in text format, which contain information about your domain. TXT records also have information that helps external network servers and services handle outgoing email from your domain.
DNS TXT records can contain up to 255 characters in a single string. You must split TXT record strings that are over 255 characters into multiple text strings within the same record. Note: If the value is split, then DKIM functionality doesnt break.
The TXT Value is what the record points to, but these records arent used to direct any traffic. Instead, theyre used to provide needed information to outside sources for email verification.
