Youre going to see a lot of formulas in Chemistry, several of which you will be required to memorize but instead of having to memorize all of the different formulas of each formula solved for each variable your life, will be so much easier if you understand how to rearrange one formula into multiple formulas all solved for different variables and note a variable is a symbol or letter that represents a value. To understand how to rearrange a formula we need to review these algebra rules. When you are trying to move the variable to the opposite side of the formula you must do the opposite operation and do this for both sides of the formula. I know this may feel really basic but please stay with me, dont skip this part because well be going over more complicated formulas that most students get wrong because they didnt review these rules. Alright, so say we wanted to solve for x for both of these questions. We look at what isnt allowing x to be by itself which is the y and since y is

Lesson Summary. Lets review. Solving by rearranging means you are moving the terms in an equation around to find your answer. When solving by rearranging, remember these rules: Use the opposite operation to move terms from one side to the other.
The basic technique to isolate a variable is to do something to both sides of the equation, such as add, subtract, multiply, or divide both sides of the equation by the same number. By repeating this process, we can get the variable isolated on one side of the equation.
On Mac, it should be Shift + Return . Do this allow the equation although spread on multiple lines to be considered as one. Then, select the equation, then click Align at .

To move a term, add its opposite to both sides of the equation. Use the multiplication principle to solve for the variable. If the variable is multiplied by a number, divide both sides of the equation by that number. If the variable is divided by a number, multiply both sides of the equation by that number.
To rearrange an equation so that another variable becomes the subject, perform the same operations on both sides of the equals sign so that eventually this variable is by itself on the left hand side. Performing the same operations on both sides makes sure that the left hand side is always equal to the right hand side.
Isolating a Variable Combine like terms inside parentheses. Distribute across the parentheses. Combine like terms on the same side of the equal sign. Add/Subtract (do the opposite operation) the constant on one side of the equal sign, and do the same to the other side.
Isolating a variable means rearranging an algebraic equation so that a different variable is on its own. The goal is to choose a sequence of operations that will leave the variable of interest on one side and put all other terms on the other side of the equal sign.

Now its multiplying by R.
Golden Rule to Solve Two Step Equations To isolate the variable on one side of the equation and to determine its value, we first add or subtract on both sides of the equation and then multiply or divide on both sides to get the final solution of the two step equation.
