Historical analysis is a method of the examination of evidence in coming to an understanding of the past. It is particularly applied to evidence contained in documents, although it can be applied to all artefacts. The historian is, first, seeking to gain some certainty as to the facts of the past.
Many teachers also refer to cueing as MSV, an acronym that stands for each of the three sources of information: meaning, structure/syntax, and visual.
Types of Primary Sources Journals. Diaries. Correspondence / letters.
Primary source analysis is exactly what it sounds like: an analysis of a primary source. You probably heard the term primary source often in school. Its referred to as a first-hand experience or account of an event, person, or object.
Consider the following when looking for reliable secondary sources: Who is the author? Was the book/ journal published by a scholarly publisher? What is the purpose of the text or motive for writing it? Does the writer have an obvious bias? Does the book/ article have an extensive bibliography?
MSV stands for meaning, language structure or syntax and visual information, which includes graphics, the letters and phonological information, the sounds.
The three cueing model says that skilled reading involves gaining meaning from print using three types of cues: Semantic (word meaning and sentence context) Syntactic (grammatical features) Grapho-phonic (letters and sounds)
Applies three key steps to analyzing primary sources (observe, reflect, question).
How to Analyze a Primary Source Look at the physical nature of your source. Think about the purpose of the source. How does the author try to get the message across? What do you know about the author? Who constituted the intended audience? What can a careful reading of the text (even if it is an object) tell you?
How to perform document analysis List your resources. Before beginning your document analysis, decide on the types of documents you plan to use. Decide how to organize the information. Make copies for notes. Ensure authenticity. Check for biases. Ask questions. Evaluate the document.
