hello and welcome to this quick presentation on the limitations of the resolution of your analyzer and the spectrum now have you ever noticed that sometimes when youre analyzing spectra you put your cursor on a peak ask for harmonics of that frequency hit the harmonics dont quite line up with the peaks now it all depends on how the harmonics are drawn whether theyre all the way through to the bottom of the graph or they actually point to the peaks of the graph but you might notice that sometimes you know youre sure the cursor you move it left you move it right youre up on top of the peak the 1x peak for example but the harmonics dont quite line up and you find that you have to adjust the frequency just a little bit to make them line up yet the peak was the cursor was on top of the peak in other cases they do line up and this is because of the way the spectrum is calculated and the limitations of resolution now just a little bit of background when you when you ask the analyzer to

Vibration analysis is a process that monitors vibration levels and investigates the patterns in vibration signals. It is commonly conducted both on the time waveforms of the vibration signal directly, as well as on the frequency spectrum, which is obtained by applying Fourier Transform on the time waveform.
The resolution of the spectrum increases with the number of spectral lines. The more spectral lines, the more information the spectrum contains. Increasing the number of lines also increases the required memory and time to measure the spectrum.
There are three main parameters that are measured to evaluate the vibration characteristics of any dynamic system as: acceleration, displacement and velocity.
The vertical resolution (number of horizontal lines) on a TV or computer screen. The term typically is used with TVs; for example, HDTVs have 720 or 1,080 lines, while analog TVs used 525 or 625 lines, several of which were invisible between frames.
F-MAX means Frequency Max. This is the maximum frequency range used when capturing vibration data on a spectrum. For example, with a rolling element bearing, F-MAX should be set to 70 times the run speed.
The resolution of the spectrum increases with the number of spectral lines. The more spectral lines, the more information the spectrum contains. Increasing the number of lines also increases the required memory and time to measure the spectrum.
The frequency resolution of the vibration spectrum is equal to the Fmax divided by the number of lines (and multiplied by the window factor - which we will ignore here for now). So, if we collect a spectrum with an Fmax of 1,600 Hz with 800 lines of resolution, the resolution on our plot will be 1,600 / 800 or 2 Hz.
The line frequency (50/60Hz) is the frequency at which AC power is supplied to the motor; this causes changes in magnetic attraction between the rotor and stator at twice the line frequency. The varying magnetic forces cause small dimensional changes in the iron material, leading to vibration.
