Stereo microscopes are used to determine basic class characteristics of fired bullets, bullet fragments and cartridge/shotshell cases. A comparison microscope is used for the examination of fired bullets, bullet fragments and cartridge/shotshell cases.
The rifling is the spiral pattern of lands and grooves (indentations in the barrel) that impart spin on a bullet to stabilize the flight of the bullet through the air; the rifling leaves marks on the bullet as it passes through the barrel.
A barrel will produce individual markings in addition to a bullets land and groove impressions as the bullet passes through, and it is these unique markings that an examiner evaluates to determine whether a given bullet was fired from a particular firearm.
Bullets fired from guns have distinct markings, as unique as fingerprints. Once the state lab has one bullet, all they need is a gun, a test fire, and time to compare the two projectiles. Almost every bullet fired from a gun, can be traced back to that gun using a microscope.
Since rifling characteristics can differ from one firearm manufacturer to another, forensic firearm examiners can determine the type of weapon that fired a particular bullet by examining the impressions of the lands and grooves on the bullet.
Therefore, ballistics per se is not an exact science rather it is a branch of physics or applied science which is subject to changes and development depending upon the demands of the modern civilization.
Ballistics is the forensic science dealing with firearms and firearm projectiles. Specifically, the field of ballistics is concerned with identifying specific marks a firearm makes on a bullet, the angle of trajectory which a bullet travels after being fired, and the damage a bullet causes when it strikes a surface.
These studies report amazingly low error rates, typically around 1 percent or less, which emboldens examiners to testify that their methodology is nearly infallible.
While these are the advantages, there are also disadvantages of the ballistic missiles. The high cost, unavailability of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, and its limited effect while using conventional explosives against destroying the fortified targets are the disadvantages.
For roughly a century, forensic ballistics experts have been comparing bullets and cartridge cases by visually examining them under a split-screen microscope. After comparing the bullets, the examiner can offer an expert opinion as to whether they match but cannot express the strength of the evidence numerically.
