Bonds and stocks are settled within two business days, whereas Treasury bills and bonds are settled within the next business day.
SETTLEMENT PROCESS OVERVIEW In the financial industry, settlement is generally the term applied to the exchange of payment to the seller and the transfer of securities to the buyer of a trade. Its the final step in the lifecycle of a securities transaction.
The settlement date for securities transactions such as a stock sale. It refers to the obligation in the brokerage business to settle securities trades by the third day following the trade date. The settlement occurs when the seller receives the sales price (the brokers commission) and the buyer receives the shares.
Eighteen years later, in 1993, the Commission used that authority to again shorten the settlement cycle from T+5 business days to T+3. The SEC then shortened from T+3 to T+2 on the first full day of spring, 2017. The upcoming change in 2024 will be the first alteration of the settlement cycle since then.

U.S. Treasury notes and bonds are settled through physical-delivery. It is the prospect of having to make or take delivery of an actual U.S. Treasury security that imposes the pricing integrity to the U.S. Treasury futures market.
When does settlement occur? For most stock trades, settlement occurs two business days after the day the order executes, or T+2 (trade date plus two days).
Settlement at DTC occurs business day at approximately 4:15 p.m. eastern standard time. This is when the cash is moved through the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on behalf of all of the transactions that were processed and completed that day.
Payment settlement involves collecting the funds for the amount recorded for an order. For example, when using credit cards, the settlement process specifically involves contacting the payment system and collecting the required amount of funds against the credit card.
T+1 means that trade-related settlements must be done within one day of the transactions completion. Trades on Indian stock exchanges are currently settled in two working days after the transaction is completed (T+2).
