Encoded size increase This means that the Base64 version of a string or file will be at least 133% the size of its source (a ~33% increase). The increase may be larger if the encoded data is small.
Each Base64 digit represents exactly 6 bits of data. So, three 8-bits bytes of the input string/binary file (3×8 bits = 24 bits) can be represented by four 6-bit Base64 digits (4×6 = 24 bits). This means that the Base64 version of a string or file will be at least 133% the size of its source (a ~33% increase).
BASE64 characters are 6 bits in length. They are formed by taking a block of three octets to form a 24-bit string, which is converted into four BASE64 characters.
Convert Images to Base64 Just select your JPG, PNG, GIF, Webp, or BMP picture or drag & drop it in the form below, press the Convert to Base64 button, and you'll get a base-64 string of the image. Press a button – get base64. No ads, nonsense, or garbage. Drag and drop your image here!
As noted, when you are encoding binary 8-bit bytes with 256 possible values into a smaller set of characters, in this case 64 values, you will necessarily increase the size.
Base64 uses 4 ascii characters to encode 24-bits (3 bytes) of data. To encode, it splits up the three bytes into 4 6-bit numbers. A 6-bit number can represent 64 possible value.
Although Base64 is a relatively efficient way of encoding binary data it will, on average still increase the file size for more than 25%.
The length of a Base64-encoded string is always a multiple of 4.
With padding, a base64 string always has a length that is a multiple of 4 (if it doesn't, the string has been corrupted for sure) and thus code can easily process that string in a loop that processes 4 characters at a time (always converting 4 input characters to three or less output bytes).
By including image data within an HTML document, the browser doesn't need to make an additional web request to fetch the file, since the image is already embedded in the HTML document. A Base64 representation of an image is larger than a separate image and the string gets very long for large images.
