In American English, use double quotation marks for quotations and single quotation marks for quotations within quotations. In British English, use single quotation marks for quotations and double quotation marks for quotations within quotations.

Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets.
Whenever you quote a text, you may need to change the capitalization used in the quote. If your sentence before the quote uses a word like says, states, writes, etc., you will want to capitalize the first word you quote. If you do change a lower case word to upper case, put the capitalized letter in brackets.
In cases where you need to modify a direct quotation so that it fits into your sentence, temper editorial license with the obligation to stay true to the meaning of the original quote, and, depending on your style guide, use brackets to alert readers to changes made to your source material.
If presenting a direct quotation, you must use quotation marks and deliver the passage unaltered, including errors if any. When quoting within quotation marks you must not alter or correct the text you are quoting. The quotation marks should suffice to make it clear that the text is that of the source, not yours.
