this is the second in a series of tutorials on how to use the word templates for theses and dissertations at the University of Houston Clear Lake as we look in this folder we see two word files in here something to point out is that these are not regular document files these are dot X files or Microsoft Word template files thats different from a Microsoft Word document which is a docx file to understand how the template files work its important to point out that every Microsoft Word document is based on a template this is a normal document that you would open whenever you open Microsoft Word and you notice up here that there are a number of preset styles like normal which is Calibri font 11-point heading 1 heading 2 title the margins are set at 1 inch and so on so this is based on a template file that is exists on your computer that sends this information to Word document every time you open it up when were working with the template files the same exact principle is in place except

To put a blank page into your Word document, place the cursor where you want the new page to begin and then click Insert > Blank Page. The blank page opens, ready for whatever you want to add.
Insert a cover page On the Insert tab, click Cover Page. Click a cover page layout from the gallery of options. After you insert a cover page, you can replace the sample text with your own text by clicking to select an area of the cover page, such as the title, and typing your text.
Add a new page template in the toolbar, then choose Edit Page Templates. in the toolbar, then choose the page template you want to use as a starting point. Type a name for the new page template, then click OK. A new page template appears below the original in the sidebar.
Go to Layout > Breaks > Page. Click or tap in the document where you want a page break. Go to Insert > Page Break.
Click the “Save As” type drop-down list, and then select “Word Template (*. DOTX)” as the file type. Enable the “Save Thumbnail” option, then click the “Save” button. If Microsoft Word displays a warning message about saving the file in a new format, click the “OK” button.
Capitalize major words of the title. Place the main title and any subtitle on separate double-spaced lines if desired. There is no maximum length for titles; however, keep titles focused and include key terms. Place one double-spaced blank line between the paper title and the author names.
docx file type is for a standard Word document which contains no macros. The . dotx file type is used for templates from which new documents are generated. It cannot contain macros, either.
Click your "Insert" tab to find all of the different insert commands. Click the "Blank Page" command. There are three options for new pages: insert cover page, blank page and page break. Click or tap the "Blank Page" button to automatically add a new page to your document.
Insert a page break Put your cursor where you want one page to end and the next to begin. Go to Insert > Page Break.
Various word processors, including Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, and LibreOffice Writer, can convert DOTX files to other formats. For example, in the Windows and Mac versions of Microsoft Word, select File → Save As to convert DOTX files to one of the following formats: . DOCX - Microsoft Word Document.
