Theres a simple keyboard shortcut you can use whenever you need to insert the dollar sign. Just hold down the shift key, and press the number 4 at the same time. This may be on the top row, or at the side if you have a full-size keyboard with its own number pad. For Mac devices, its just the same.
To change the default currency settings in Windows, in Control Panel, choose Clock and Region Region Additional Settings. On the Currency tab, in the Currency symbol box, type or select a currency symbol.
Select the cells that you want to format and then, in the Number group on the Home tab, click the down arrow in the Number Format box. Choose either Currency or Accounting.
How to get the dollar sign in popular word processors without typing? Go to Insert from the drop-down menu at the top. Select Symbol on Word, or Special Characters on Google Docs. You should be able to select the $ sign. On Google Docs, you may need to select Symbol and then Currency from the category menus.
(If you want to apply the Currency format instead, select the cells, and press Ctrl+Shift+$.)
Tip: To quickly apply the Currency format, select the cell or range of cells that you want to format, and then press Ctrl+Shift+$. Like the Currency format, the Accounting format is used for monetary values. But, this format aligns the currency symbols and decimal points of numbers in a column.
