The three most commonly used options in Microsoft Word are single spacing (1.0), double spacing (2.0) and one-and-a-half line spacing (1.5).
Line spacing is the space between each line in a paragraph. Word allows you to customize the line spacing to be single spaced (one line high), double spaced (two lines high), or any other amount you want. The default spacing in Word is 1.08 lines, which is slightly larger than single spaced.
In the Paragraph dialog box, select one of the options from the dropdown menu under Line spacing. You can select single-, 1.5-, or double-spacing, or you can select Multiple and set your own custom line spacing.
For example, a line spacing of 1 means the line spacing will be as large as one line, a line spacing of 2 means the line spacing will be the size of two lines, and so on.
In typography, there are several types of spaces: sinkage (space on a page above a textblock), indent (space before the paragraph), leading (vertical space), word spacing, and letter spacing.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the international community that develops accessibility standards for the web, says: Line spacing should be at least a space-and-a-half within paragraphs. So around 150 percent or 1.5 times the font size. Spacing following paragraphs should be at least two times the font size.
The traditional term for line spacing is leading (rhymes with bedding ), so named because traditional print shops put strips of lead between lines of type to increase vertical space. Sometimes you see this term in typesetting software.
Add a line between text columns Right-click the text box, click Format Text Box, and then click the Colors and Lines tab. Under Preview, click the button for the center vertical line. . Under Line, select the options you want for the center line, and then click OK.
Word allows you to customize the line spacing to be single spaced (one line high), double spaced (two lines high), or any other amount you want. The default spacing in Word is 1.08 lines, which is slightly larger than single spaced. In the images below, you can compare different types of line spacing.
The default line spacing in Word is 1.15. By default, paragraphs are followed by a blank line and headings have a space above them. Go to Home Line and Paragraph Spacing.
