"Broken is the golden bowl, the spirit has flown forever, let the bell toll. A saintly soul floats on the Saigon River, a world known weep now or never more. An anthem for the Queen Lee's dead, a dirge for the doubly dead who loved her for her wealth and hated her for her pride. Let the burial rite be read, the funeral song be sung for the innocence that died so young. How shall the ritual then be read, the requiem be sung by you, by yours, by the evil eye and slanderous tongue. Let a Sabbath song go up to God so solemnly, sweet Leonora hath gone before with hope that flew."

Over time, however, scientists have been able to explain the development of this super sensitive and specialized sense organ. As this Ted-Ed video explains, the human eye developed through a series of selective adaptations, and this evolutionary history can be seen in the way our vision works.
Both cones and rods participate in dark adaptation, slowly increasing their sensitivity to light in a dim environment. Cones adapt faster, so the first few minutes of adaptation reflect cone-mediated vision.
Dark adaptation refers to the ability of both rod (scotopic) and cone (photopic) mechanisms to recover sensitivity in the dark following exposure to bright lights. The first rapid recovery is attributed to the cones and the later recovery to the rods.
You know how when you leave a dark room for the bright light of a sunny day there are spots and color distortion that eventually fade away? This is light adaptation. The other end of the spectrum is dark adaptation which is the adjustment from an illuminated area to darkness.
The iris that surrounds the pupil contains muscles that control the size of the pupil. When confronted with low light conditions, the iris expands the pupil as wide as possible. This dilation lets as much light as possible into the eye so that sensitivity is enhanced.
What enables the wider reach is that the eye adapts its definition of what is black. The eye takes approximately 20–30 minutes to fully adapt from bright sunlight to complete darkness and becomes 10,000 to 1,000,000 times more sensitive than at full daylight.
With light adaptation, the eye has to quickly adapt to the background illumination to be able to distinguish objects in this background. Light adaptation can be explored by determining increment thresholds. In an increment threshold experiment, a test stimulus is presented on a background of a certain luminance.
Light adaptation occurs at all levels of the visual system, from photoreceptors to central neurons. Yet, the function of the entire visual system depends on the ability of the photoreceptors themselves to adjust their sensitivity to the ambient lighting situation.
Light adaptation occurs where the visual system attempts to compensate for changes in the level of illumination and colour constancy is experienced where the colour of an object tends to remain constant although the level and colour of the illumination are changed (Berns 2000).
Adaptation is the ability to adjust vision in bright and dark areas. When we enter a dark room from bright light, the rhodopsin pigment broken down in bright light is regenerated. It dilates the pupil and allows more light to enter the eyes. This is called dark adaptation.
