[Music] hello and welcome Im Nathalie Lawrence and in this video Im going to be showing you how to format the footnotes separator as well as taking a look at how to format the footnote area at the bottom of a page in Microsoft Word the reason Im doing this video is because of what happened to me in a recent project of mine Id inserted in a footnote started to write in the text and Id noticed that the gap between the text and the line above it was larger than I expected and I actually wanted a more traditional look where theres very little space between the two so I knew it wasnt an issue of the paragraph spacing in the footnote text because I checked the styles and Ive checked the formatting here and that was all fine so thats what prompted me to look at whether you can format the footnote separator here so in case this happens to you it isnt unexpected gap Im going to show you how to close it okay so first of all you need to have a footnote and have your cursor selected in

Why Are My Footnotes Moving to Another Page in Microsoft Word? If your footnotes keep moving to another page in Word, its because the contents of the footnote are too large for your pages footer. Your page margins might be too small or the font size might be too big.
To keep the footnote together in Word: Press Ctrl+Shift+S to Apply Styles. Footnote Text. Click Modify. Click Format. Select Paragraph. Under Line and Page Breaks tab. Check box by Keep lines together. Click OK.
Move a footnote or an endnote To move or copy a note, you work with the note reference mark in the document window, not with the text of the note. Select the note reference mark. Drag the mark to the new location.
Click the Paragraph Dialog Launcher. Now click on the Indents and Spacing tab and then set the line spacing to some exact amount of points. A fair guide is 12-14 points for single spacing and 24-28 points to simulate double spacing. That should pull the footnote text onto the one page.
Remove or change a footnote or endnote separator The Footnotes pane appears at the bottom of your document. You can edit the color or style of the separator by choosing options on the Home tab, or, to delete the separators, click Footnote Separator in the Footnotes list, and then select and delete the separator line.

This happens when the final line on a page contains a footnote reference, and the paragraph has the Widow/Orphan control setting switched on, and where having the footnote on the same page as its reference would force that line onto the next page, breaking the Widow/Orphan control rule.
