I find that theres sometimes a little bit of confusion when it comes to the difference between granting ownership of a copyright and granting a license. So heres kind of the difference. Granting ownership of a copyright is exactly what it sounds like you are granting ownership of whatever that creative work is. Now, it might be via work for hire and it might be via assignment and those -- that term, work for hire, is often used incorrectly. There are only certain circumstances where creation of something will qualify as a work for hire. But, regardless, granting ownership of a copyright grants ownership of that thing. Where it gets confusing is when you start talking about copyright licenses. A copyright license is otherwise known as permission to do something. And a copyright, remember, is a bundle of different rights, so, the right to copy it, the right to distribute, the right to sell, and display, and all kinds of other things. So you can license each of those rights to differe

ingly, you cannot claim copyright to anothers work, no matter how much you change it, unless you have the owners consent.
Examples of adaptations include: a screenplay based on a novel. a book translated from one language to another. a chapter in an open textbook that blends multiple open educational resources.
In a media context, adaptation is defined as: An altered or amended version of a text, musical composition, etc., (now esp.) one adapted for filming, broadcasting, or production on the stage from a novel or similar literary source.[1]
For example, for literary works the adaptation right is defined to include turning a novel into a film, translating a work into another language, or converting a computer program into a different language or code.
This myth of the 30% rule is pervasive and widely cited around the Internet, but it is simply false. There is no 30% rule, and any time you copy someone elses writings, drawings, website, or other creative work, you run the risk of copyright infringement.
The copyright notice generally consists of three elements: The symbol (the letter C in a circle), or the word Copyright or the abbreviation Copr.; The year of first publication of the work; and. The name of the owner of copyright in the work.
Legally only the copyright owner has the right to authorise adaptations and reproductions of their work - this includes the making of a derivative work. The copyright owner is generally the creator of the original work, or it may be someone the creator has given copyright to (i.e. next of kin).
Adaptation rights for a copyrighted work grant a party the right to create versions of the copyrighted work in different media. For example, a novelist may grant a motion picture producer the right to create a movie based on her novel, granting the producer the right to adapt the novel into a film.
Adapting copyrighted material requires permission from the owner of the original work. Reproduction or performance of an adaptation may require the permission of both the owner of the rights for the original work, and of the rights holder for the adapted work.
An adaptation, also called a derivative work or remix, is something created from a copyrighted work, and that creation is sufficiently original to be protected by copyright.
