To create a subheading in your table of contents, create the subheading in your document. Highlight it and click Heading 2 at the top of your screen. It will be added to your table of contents, nested underneath the appropriate chapter heading.
Click inside any cell in the larger table. Once again, use the Insert tab to create a table. For example, click on cell 1, go to Insert, Table and then create a 2-by-2 table. This 2-by-2 is now nested inside of the 3-by-3.
On the toolbar ribbon, select References. Near the left end, select Insert Table of Contents. (Or select Table of Contents Insert Table of Contents. The table of contents is inserted, showing the headings and page numbering in your document.
The problem is that only if the entire paragraph is formatted as a heading will it be included in the TOC. The easiest way to make sure that you apply the Linked heading style to the entire paragraph is to NOT select any word or phrase in the heading paragraph.
Go to References Table of Contents. Select Custom table of contents. Use the settings to show, hide, and align page numbers, add or change the tab leader, set formats, and specify how many levels of headings to show. For more info, see Custom table of contents .
Add a heading Select the text you want to use as a heading. On the Home tab, move the pointer over different headings in the Styles gallery. Notice as you pause over each style, your text will change so you can see how it will look in your document. Click the heading style you want to use.
Adding built-in heading styles to a table of contents Click in the table of contents. Click the References tab in the Ribbon and click Table of Contents in the Table of Contents group. Select Custom Table of Contents.
Add the link Select the text or object you want to use as a hyperlink. Right-click and then click Hyperlink . Under Link to, click Place in This Document. In the list, select the heading or bookmark that you want to link to.
