To ask the judge to extend your PPO, you must file a Motion to Modify, Extend, or Terminate PPO at least three days before your PPO expires. The expiration date is on the front of your PPO.
To get a Domestic Relationship PPO, you must prove that there is reasonable cause to believe that the abuser might physically hurt you, threaten you, stalk you, or do something else that interferes with your personal liberty or safety. Reasonable cause is a lower level of proof than what is required in a criminal case.
A nondomestic PPO can prohibit the abuser from: Following you or appearing within your sight. Approaching or confronting you. Appearing at your work or home. Going onto or staying on property you own, rent, or occupy. Calling you. Sending you mail or other messages.
An ex parte domestic relationship PPO is valid for at least 182 days, approximately six months. The abuser can request a hearing to modify (change) or rescind (cancel) the PPO. If the judge issues you a PPO after this hearing, it would be called a final domestic relationship PPO.
There is no fee to file the petition. When you file your petition, you will be called the petitioner and the person you want protection from is the respondent. The petition gives the judge information needed to decide whether to give you the PPO.
