Who is eligible? Effective January 1, 2000, the National Defense Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-65) authorizes Military Funeral Honors to Active Duty Soldiers, Retirees and Veterans.
The DOD began the implementation plan for providing military funeral honors for eligible Veterans on January 1, 2000. Upon the familys request, Public Law 106-65 requires that every eligible Veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony. For assistance please contact Military OneSource at 800-342-9647.
At any military funeral, shots fired are part of the three-volley salute after the death of a veteran. All gun salutes need not amount to twenty-one shots and may depend on a specific hierarchy based on status or rank. What must be noted is that the number of shots fired will always amount to an odd number.
To apply for burial benefits, complete VA Form 21-530, Application for Burial Benefits. Attach a copy of the veterans military discharge document (DD Form 214 or equivalent), death certificate, and funeral and burial bills. The bills should indicate they have paid them in full.
