Youre at least 18 years old or have a qualifying child. Have earned income of at least $1 and not more than $31,950. Have a valid Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for you, your spouse/RDP, and any qualifying children.
You can claim the Child Tax Credit by entering your children and other dependents on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and attaching a completed Schedule 8812, Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents.
If the EITC amount is more than what you owe in taxes, you get the money back in your tax refund . If you qualify for the credit, you can still get a refund even if you do not owe income tax.
You have to be 25 or older but under 65 to qualify for the EIC. You also have to have lived in the United States for more than half of the year and cant be a dependent of another person. In 2024, you can earn up to $18,591 ($25,511 if married and filing a joint) with no qualifying children.
Federal EITC requires filing of your federal return (form 1040EZ, 1040 or 1040A and Schedule Earned Income Credit). You can also file amended returns for three years back if you did not claim your EITC or CTC in prior years. There is no late filing penalty if you do not owe any tax in the prior year.
