Much work has been accomplished since that date; 68 of the original 73 miles of the Historic Columbia River Highway are now open to travel either by motor vehicle (Historic Highway or connecting county roads) or by foot and bicycle (State Trail). Only 5 miles are needed to complete the connection.
With the help of Frank Seiberling, president of Goodyear and Henry Joy, president of the Packard Motor Car Company, his dream was realized. The road, completed by 1915, was named the Lincoln Highway after President Abraham Lincoln.
Area Status: Open Oregon Department of Transportation - maps and information on access, road construction, and the reconnection project. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department - information on areas closed to vehicle traffic, which are managed as the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.
