One signer of the Declaration of Independence later recanted. Richard Stockton, a lawyer from Princeton, New Jersey, became the only signer of the Declaration of Independence to recant his support of the revolution. On November 30, 1776, the hapless delegate was captured by the British and thrown in jail.
Richard Stockton is best known as one of the five New Jersey signers of the Declaration of Independence as a member of the Second Continental Congress in the summer of 1776.
In 1776, the New Jersey delegates to the Congress were holding out against Independence. When news of this docHubed the constituents, New Jersey elected Richard Stockton and Dr. Witherspoon to replace two of the five New Jersey delegates.
Stockton was the first person from New Jersey to sign the Declaration of Independence. Stockton was sent by Congress, along with fellow signer George Clymer, on an exhausting two-month journey to Fort Ticonderoga in New York to assist the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War.
He espoused the Federalist cause in the 1790s, and served as a Presidential elector on behalf of John Adams in 1797. Two years later, Bassett was elected Governor of Delaware and continued in that post until 1801.

Stockton was the representative for New Jerseys 2nd congressional district and was a Federalist. He served from 1813 to 1815. He was previously a senator from New Jersey as a Federalist from 1796 to March 3, 1799.
