By performing at participating Equity regional and summer stock theatres, actors can collect points toward their membership. Each week worked at a qualifying Equity theater equals one EMC point or credit. Actors currently need 25 EMC points to join Equity.
Equity contracts for individual members usually cover jobs in three categories: Principal, Chorus and Stage Manager. The Principal contract is used for all principal actors and most stage managers. The Chorus contract is used for those actors who are primarily performing chorus work.
The Guest Artist Agreement is used by not-for-profit educational or community theatres that occasionally employ professional actors. No more than two actors may be employed in any one production under the agreement unless special permission is granted.
If youve been a member in good standing of SAG-AFTRA, AGMA, AGVA, or GIAA for at least one year and have worked for at least one day under that unions jurisdiction as a principal (or three days as a background artist), you are eligible to join AEA.

There are 3 ways to join Actors Equity Association. Actors may join AEA by virtue of employment under an Equity contract, by virtue of prior membership in a performing arts sister union (SAG-AFTRA, AGMA, AGVA or GIAA) or through the Equity Membership Program.
Performers may join SAG-AFTRA if the applicant is a paid-up member of an affiliated performers union such as ACTRA, AEA, AGMA or AGVA for a period of one year, and has worked and been paid for at least once as a principal performer in that unions jurisdiction.
JOINING EQUITY When you wish to join Equity, you must complete a membership application and pay the required minimum of the initiation fee. Your EMC registration fee will be credited against your initiation fee (except as noted above). Once you join Equity, you will also be subject to Basic dues and Working dues.
