If you owned the home for at least 24 months (2 years) out of the last 5 years leading up to the date of sale (date of the closing), you meet the ownership requirement. For a married couple filing jointly, only one spouse has to meet the ownership requirement.
The taxpayer must show proof of income and must re-apply every year until they docHub the age of 65. At age 65 the exemption becomes permanent and does not have to be re-filed every year. This will freeze the value on the property so that the value cannot be increased unless the property is improved.
