Tips Employers must withhold Missouri income tax based upon total tips reported by the employee.
Withholding and paying caregiver taxes Neither you nor the caregiver will have to pay Medicare or Social Security taxes if the caregivers wages are below the federal threshold. For the 2023 tax year, if you paid a caregiver $2,600 or more, you must withhold and pay Medicare and Social Security taxes on their wages.
Registered Caregiver A shared care member registered with the Division of Senior and Disability Services, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, may be eligible for a tax credit equal to his or her Missouri tax liability or $500, whichever is less, to offset the cost of caring for an elderly person.
The bill defines eligible caregiver as an individual who has earned income for the taxable year in excess of $7,500 and pays or incurs expenses for providing care to a spouse or other dependent relative with long-term care needs.
Family caregivers must have a federally adjusted gross income of less than $50,000 (individual) or less than $100,000 for a couple filing jointly to receive the tax credit. They must also personally incur uncompensated expenses directly related to the care of an eligible family member.
