A tenancy without a fixed end date, such as month-to-month, is considered a periodic tenancy. When your property is leased on a periodic basis the landlord must provide either 30 or 60 days notice to the tenant of the intent to terminate the tenancy.

Dear [Tenant First Name], This letter is to inform you that the lease for [Address] signed on [Lease Start Date] will terminate on [Lease End Date] and will not renew. Attached is a copy of the lease agreement for your reference.
Dear (Name of landlord or manager), This letter constitutes my written (number of days notice that you need to give based on your lease agreement) -day notice that I will be moving out of my apartment on (date), the end of my current lease. I am leaving because (new job, rent increase, etc.
A notice of lease termination letter should be written on the landlords or management companys letterhead and include: The date of the letter. The name and address of the tenant. A request that the tenant vacate by a specific date. The reason for termination.
I wish to inform you that I will be terminating my lease on [date you plan to terminate]. This letter provides the necessary notice of [required notice] as outlined in the lease. Tenants can use the North Carolina Tenant Notice to Vacate Form to inform landlords and property managers of their intention to vacate the rental property at least 30 days before they intend to move out, or longer if required by the terms of their North Carolina Lease Agreement.
In California, tenants may be able to legally break their lease before its expiration date if they have a justified reason. Justified reasons for breaking a lease are typically related to issues that make the unit uninhabitable or create an unsafe or untenable living situation.
