Employers contributions to the RRSP are included in the employees income, but are then deducted as part of the RRSP contributions deduction. Annual contribution limits (including employee and employer contributions) are the same as regular RRSPs - see our RRSP/RRIF page for annual limits.
If you meet all of the previous conditions and have not already withdrawn the unused RRSP contributions, you can withdraw them without having tax withheld. To do this, fill out Form T3012A, Tax Deduction Waiver on the Refund of Your Unused RRSP, PRPP, or SPP Contributions from your RRSP, PRPP or SPP.
You can withdraw the over contribution. There are two ways. Simplest is just to withdraw and pay the withholding tax. Then file a T1-OVP at tax time to get the withholding tax back. The second is to get a preapproved form from the CRA and give it to the bank. They will then not withhold tax on withdrawal.
It makes sense to maximize your RRSP contributions if youre expecting to have a lower tax rate in retirement than you do now. This is because an RRSP offers a tax deduction now, but when you make withdrawals (presumably in retirement), the full amount of the withdrawal is included in your taxable income.
What if you contribute more than your RRSP deduction limit. Generally, you have to pay a tax of 1 percent per month on your contributions that exceed your RRSP deduction limit by more than $2,000.

The penalties for over-contributing to your RRSP can really add up over time. If you over-contribute within the $2000 buffer, there is no penalty. But if you contribute more than your limit plus the $2000 buffer, there is a 1% per month penalty that starts the month of the over-contribution.
You can carry forward undeducted RRSP contributions for deduction in a later year even after the year you turn age 71. In the right situation, this may help reduce taxes in a future year.
Taking into account your $2,000 lifetime over-contribution limit, RRSP over-contributions are taxed at a penalty of 1% per month. For example, if you over-contributed to your RRSP by $3,220, youd subtract $2,000 and be left with an over-contribution amount of $1,220.
