The Standard Homestead Exemption is available to all homeowners who otherwise qualify by ownership and residency requirements and it is an amount equal to $2,000 which is deducted from the 40% assessed value of the homestead property.
To be granted a homestead exemption: A person must actually occupy the home, and the home is considered their legal residence for all purposes. Persons that are away from their home because of health reasons will not be denied homestead exemption.
To qualify for school tax exemption, your property must be owner-occupied and you must be 62 years of age by January 1 of the qualifying year. You must provide proof of age (copy of drivers license, birth certificate, Georgia state identification card, etc.).
