Work permits can be obtained from the state of Michigan school issuing officer (the chief administrator of a school district, intermediate school district, etc.) of the school the minor attends or the school district where the minor will be employed.
Minors can't sell or serve alcoholic beverages, but a minor over the age of 16 (or age 14 in a retail setting) can work where alcohol is being sold if alcohol doesn't exceed 50% of sales. The Michigan Workforce Opportunity Wage Act (minimum wage law) allows employers to pay minors 85% of the established minimum wage.
A temporary permit is valid for 10 days from the date of issue. A work permit may be issued by the school district in which the minor's place of employment is located, or by the public school academy or nonpublic school nearest that place of employment.
