Options after the Completion of the STEM OPT Extension benefit. When you have completed your STEM OPT, you are permitted to remain in the United States for up to sixty calendar days from the end date of your STEM OPT period in order to prepare for departure.
The STEM OPT extension is a 24-month period of temporary training that directly relates to an F-1 student's program of study in an approved STEM field.
You may work for more than one employer on STEM OPT, but each employment occurrence must be related to your stem STEM field of study, and must be for at least 20 hours per week.
All international students who successfully apply for OPT can work in the USA for at least 12 months. However, if your degree is in a STEM area, you can apply to extend your OPT by 24 months. This means you could enjoy working in the USA for up to 3 years!
Your DSO will keep your Form I-983 on file and you do not need to submit the Form I-983 to USCIS unless requested to do so. Once your DSO receives the Form I-983 you completed with your employer, they can then recommend you in SEVIS.

DHS requires that the STEM OPT student and employer work together to complete the Form I-983. Properly completing this form will successfully document the relationship between the STEM OPT opportunity, the academic degree received and the learning objectives of the F-1 student.
