Instrument training is hard very hard and it requires you to learn and retain loads of information. This is not a quick process, so dont get fooled by the seemingly easy-to-obtain 40 instrument hours required prior to taking your checkride.
You must have logged the following: At least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command. At least 10 of these hours must be in airplanes for an instrument-airplane rating. A total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time on the areas of operation listed in 61.65(c).
An Instrument Rating (IR) is a pilot rating earned through intensive training focused on flying solely by reference to instruments. It is arguably one of the most valuable ratings you can add to your pilot certificate and is a fun and challenging discipline of flight training.
Instrument Rating (Restricted) Like the EASA EIR, it is designed for amateur pilots but unlike the EIR pilots are permitted to fly instrument departures and approaches, so it is a more useful rating. However, it is applicable to only UK CAA licenses, aircraft and airspace.
The Instrument Rating is not broken out from other Private Pilot additions in the FAA data. but its by far the most common, so its reasonable to assume the Instrument Rating pass rate is around 80% (20% failure rate). Very few add-on checkrides are conducted by FAA Inspectors.

While 14 CFR 61.57(d) does not stipulate a minimum time requirement for the IPC, a good rule of thumb is to plan at least 90 minutes of ground time and at least two hours of flight time for a solid evaluation of the pilots instrument flying knowledge and skills.
The instrument Checkride will consist of approximately four hours of examination (2 hours on the knowledge portion and 2 hours of flight time). The practical test will be conducted either by an FAA inspector or a designated examiner.
